The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a special training program for female drivers, targeting over 1.2 million women licensed to drive in Nigeria.
The “Women on Wheels” initiative aims to enhance road safety, develop skills, and promote gender inclusion in the transportation sector.
The program provides female drivers with necessary training and support to drive safely and confidently on Nigerian roads, focusing on skill development, safe driving practices, and addressing specific challenges faced by women drivers.
Mallam Shehu Mohammed, FRSC Corps Marshal, represented by Deputy Corps Marshal Clement Oladele, emphasized the importance of the initiative, citing the growing number of women taking to the roads for personal and commercial activities.
He noted that the program would not only enhance road safety but also empower women to take control of their lives. He appealed to women groups to educate their members on the importance of attending driving schools before driving on the road.
Mrs. Edna Azura, President of the National Council for Women Societies, commended the FRSC for the initiative, saying it would help women become more professional in road usage.
She pledged that the Association would embark on grassroots sensitization across the country to emphasize the need for women to receive proper training and be certified before getting behind the wheels.
Dr. Nafisat Shehu-Mohammed, President of the Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association (ROSOWA), assured that the Association would collaborate with women groups to promote the Women on Wheels initiative. She stated that the Association would work towards ensuring effective traffic management in the country.
Kudirat Ibrahim, FRSC Corps Transport Standardization Officer, stated that the Women on Wheels initiative provides a platform for women to share experiences, discuss challenges, and explore opportunities in the transport industry. Senior women in military and paramilitary organizations also attended the event, pledging to support the FRSC in empowering women to contribute to socio-economic activities in the country.
The “Women on Wheels” program is a timely intervention, given the increasing number of women drivers on Nigerian roads. By providing targeted training and support, the FRSC aims to reduce accidents, promote responsible driving practices, and enhance road safety for all road users.
