The Nigerian Senate has paid tribute to the late Afenifere Leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.
During a Thursday sitting on February 20, 2025, the Senate paid glowing tributes to Adebanjo, eulogizing him as a dedicated advocate for democracy, justice, and good governance.
Senator Gbanga Daniel (APC-Ogun), who sponsored a motion with 21 other senators to honor Adebanjo, praised the late elder statesman as a lifelong advocate for justice and good governance.
Adebanjo, born on February 10, 1928, began his political journey in 1943 as a follower of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. He later joined the Action Group in 1951, becoming a mentee and political disciple of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
The Senate resolved to urge the Federal Government to immortalize Adebanjo’s legacy by naming a national monument after him. A delegation will also be sent to commiserate with his family and the people of Ijebu land.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, thanked Daniel for bringing the motion, stating that the Senate would mourn with Adebanjo’s family and the people of Ijebu land.
Lawmakers praised Adebanjo as a national leader who earned loyalty and respect. The Senate observed a minute of silence in his honor, celebrating his life and legacy as a champion of democracy and justice.
Senator Gbanga Daniel (APC-Ogun) remembered Adebanjo, saying: “He was a man who spoke truth to power, not out of defiance, but out of duty to the ideals of fairness, good governance, and the well-being of the people.”
Senator Abdulfatai Buhari (APC-Oyo) described Adebanjo as “a very strict man, always fighting for justice and the masses.”
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, said Adebanjo “contributed his quota, speaking out, doing everything possible to ensure a better Nigeria, and it has pleased God to call him to paradise, for us, we cannot question the will of God.”
Rest in peace baba
