Anambra Government Clarifies Crackdown on Criminal Activities Linked to Fake Native Doctors

The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing criminal activities linked to fraudulent native doctors while preserving the integrity of genuine traditional medicine practitioners. Governor Chukwuma Soludo recently intensified efforts to combat crime in the state, targeting individuals accused of aiding kidnappers and gunmen by preparing harmful charms. This move has sparked concern among some native and traditional medicine practitioners. In a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, the government clarified that the governor’s stance is not a blanket condemnation of traditional medicine or native doctors. Instead, the crackdown is focused on those misusing spiritual practices for criminal purposes. Mefor emphasized, “Governor Soludo never declared war on all native doctors but rather on fake and harmful individuals involved in aiding criminal activities. Genuine practitioners have nothing to fear.” He further noted that investigations into some native doctors in the South-East have uncovered disturbing practices that threaten the safety and morality of society. “This targeted effort aims to root out those exploiting spiritual powers to mislead the youth and perpetuate criminality,” Mefor explained. The statement highlighted the importance of recognizing the cultural significance of traditional medicine while ensuring that unscrupulous elements are exposed and prosecuted. The government encouraged the public to cooperate in maintaining a safe and ethical society. Governor Soludo urged residents to work with the government to eliminate criminality and uphold values such as respect for human life, integrity, morality, and hard work. He called on citizens to remain vigilant, adding, “Security is everyone’s responsibility. If you see something, hear something, say something.” This initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to promote peace and safeguard its rich cultural heritage while addressing security challenges.
