On Thursday, May 22, 2025, the Senate took a significant step towards enhancing Nigeria’s education system by passing a bill to establish a Federal University of Education in Gumel, Jigawa state, at the second reading stage in Abuja.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Hussaini Babangida Uba, aims to upgrade the existing Jigawa State College of Education in Gumel into a federal university.

According to Senator Uba, “The development of a sound and robust educational system hinges on the availability of well-trained teachers.

This university will serve as a hub for producing professional educators equipped with the skills to meet Nigeria’s educational needs.”

Senator Uba stressed that “This initiative will not only transform educational development in Jigawa State but also contribute significantly to national capacity building in the education sector.

I respectfully seek the support of my distinguished colleagues for the speedy passage of this important bill.”

The bill has been referred to relevant Senate committees for further legislative inputs.

With the Jigawa State Government agreeing to transfer the existing infrastructure of the College of Education Gumel for the university’s use, the project is poised to move forward without posing a financial burden on the Federal Government.
