The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Customs Service’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in combating human trafficking and the illegal trade in endangered species.
Adeniyi made the commitment on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, when a delegation from NAPTIP paid him a courtesy visit at the Customs House in Maitama, Abuja. He commended the delegation for their service to the nation and assured them of Customs’ unwavering support in strengthening national security.
He stressed that Nigeria’s security challenges require joint action, noting that the Service views crime beyond smuggling and focuses on its wider national implications. “We believe in the power of collaboration. We can achieve more with less when we work together,” he said.

The Customs chief highlighted ongoing efforts in environmental sustainability and enforcement of international conventions on flora and fauna. He pledged full support for the forthcoming national dialogue on human trafficking and stowaway incidents, scheduled for February 2026, promising technical expertise, intelligence sharing, and training support to enhance inter-agency coordination.
On her part, NAPTIP Director-General, Binta Adamu, expressed delight at formalising the partnership with the Customs Service. She said collaboration in intelligence exchange, policy development, and cross-border enforcement would strengthen national efforts to curb human trafficking. “We are a law enforcement agency mandated to prevent, prosecute, and protect. Partnership with Customs is essential for our work,” she said.
Former NIMASA Director of Public Relations, Lami Tumaka, who accompanied the NAPTIP delegation, described Customs as a strategic player in border management and maritime enforcement. She added that Customs’ involvement would be critical to the success of the upcoming national dialogue. “Your officers are often the first line of defence against illicit movement of goods and persons. Your expertise and nationwide presence are indispensable,” she said.
