The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has commenced the construction of a 7-kilometer bypass road from Bill Clinton Drive near the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to the Tunga Madaki community, designed to link nine communities affected by the airport’s second runway project. The road, awarded to CCECC Nigeria Ltd in February 2025 with a 12-month completion period, is expected to be commissioned in June 2026.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike said the project fulfills President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to communities that gave up their land for the second runway. “It would be quite unfair that their land was collected for a second runway, yet they have no access to even go to the airport. I had to take this matter to the President, and Mr. President said, ‘Whatever they ask for, give it to them’,” Wike stated. He added that the initiative demonstrates the Renewed Hope Agenda, showing that Tinubu’s government “is a listening government, a government that cares for the people, and fulfills its promises.”

Wike also urged residents to support Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairman Christopher Maikalangu, who, he said, persistently championed their cause. “Remember the man who remembered you during the rainy season,” he told the communities.

Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, described the road as a project that “touches life, opens doors, and transforms communities.” She emphasized that it will enhance market access and create opportunities for future generations, thanking President Tinubu and Wike for their commitment to renewing hope through infrastructure.

Acting Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, explained that the road will include a four-span river bridge, modern drainage, and solar street lighting, and will improve movement, security, and economic activity. He noted that it will also create jobs for local youth during construction. CCECC’s Managing Director, Guan Shuai, pledged to deliver a high-quality project on schedule.
