The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gombe State Government to upgrade General Hospital Kumo into the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Kumo, expanding tertiary healthcare services in the North-East.

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, who signed on behalf of the Federal Government in Abuja, said FMC Kumo will be the 16th tertiary health institution established under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“This MoU demonstrates our administration’s commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of location, has access to advanced medical services. The Federal Government is mobilizing resources to rapidly implement this agreement and strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Gombe State,” he said.

This was contained in a statement signed on Thursday by Alaba Balogun, Head, Information & Public Relations.

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, hailed the partnership as a “timely and strategic intervention,” stressing that it would not only boost healthcare delivery in Gombe but also benefit neighbouring states. He noted that the state’s contributory health insurance scheme already covers more than 345,000 residents, including 100,000 indigent beneficiaries.

Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Daju Kachollom, mni, described the agreement as “a symbol of progress and shared responsibility,” assuring that FMC Kumo would be developed into a regional hub for specialized healthcare under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
