FRSC Begins Countrywide Free Vehicle Inspection, Unveils Contactless Licence Printing System

By Dr. Nafisat Makinde

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has begun nationwide free vehicle checks to help motorists identify and correct mechanical faults before hitting the road, as part of efforts to curb accidents ahead of the year-end travel surge.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed announced the initiative at the flag-off of the 2025 Ember Months Campaign in Abuja, saying the free inspections will run until mid-January 2026. The operation targets high-traffic routes, with personnel and logistics deployed to ease congestion and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

He said the Corps will also intensify public sensitisation through motor-park campaigns and town-hall meetings to educate drivers on safe road use and adherence to speed limits, seat-belt laws, and vehicle maintenance routines.

In a major digital shift, Mohammed revealed that the Corps will soon roll out a contactless biometric capture system with on-the-spot printing of driver’s licences, replacing temporary permits with a one-stop, fully digitised process. He described it as a breakthrough that will “end delays, strengthen verification, and improve transparency in licence issuance.”

The Corps Marshal commended the Federal Government for its continued support, noting that new technologies have improved the Corps’ response time and enforcement efficiency nationwide. He urged motorists to “take responsibility for their safety,” echoing the theme of the campaign.

The 2025 Ember Months Campaign will focus on proactive prevention of road crashes through collaboration with transport unions, fleet operators, and local communities across the country.
