Livinus Chibuike Victor, a journalist from Abuja, is set to attempt the Guinness World Record for the longest interview marathon, focusing on press freedom and journalism resilience in Nigeria. The 72-hour marathon, titled “Nigeria Our Strength,” will take place from April 17 to 20, 2025, at Harrow Park Golf Club in Abuja. Victor shared information about the initiative during a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council Secretariat on Thursday, April 10, 2025.

Victor stressed that this attempt is not only a personal achievement but also a symbolic call to action to recognize the crucial role journalists play in strengthening democracy, both nationally and globally. He stated, “Despite increasing global pressures, including media censorship and targeted attacks on reporters, journalists remain committed to the core values of truth and accountability.”

The marathon aims to honor journalists as key figures in democracy and truth-tellers while promoting increased investment in high-quality journalism and protecting media professionals. Victor emphasized that a free press is essential for democracy, noting that the event will include insightful interviews with prominent Nigerians from different fields.

He stated, “This is not just a world record attempt; it’s a symbolic effort to highlight journalism’s lasting impact on creating transparent and accountable societies.” Victor expressed gratitude to the NUJ FCT Council for their support and encouraged stakeholders, including civil society, policymakers, and the public, to participate in the event and promote the message of press freedom.

Comrade Grace Ike, Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, praised the initiative as timely and courageous, commending Victor for using his platform to advance journalism and democratic values. In her keynote address, “Press Freedom: The Foundation of Democracy,” Comrade Ike characterized the 72-hour marathon as a strong testament to the role journalists play in shaping informed societies.

She stressed that press freedom is a fundamental right in any democracy, expressing concern over the increasing threats journalists face worldwide, including censorship, harassment, violence, and death. She stated, “We aim to highlight these issues and advocate for stronger protections for journalists worldwide through this marathon.”
