The National Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Comrade Aisha Ibrahim, has called for special considerations for female journalists covering the Hajj. Speaking from Saudi Arabia, where she is on an official assignment to cover the Hajj for Borno State, Ibrahim emphasized the challenges female journalists face during the spiritual exercise.
According to Ibrahim, covering the Hajj is a fulfilling experience that provides an opportunity to perform the Hajj and serve humanity. However, she noted that it remains one of the most difficult beats due to the physical stress involved, which can last for 35 to 40 days. Ibrahim stressed that female journalists are essential in handling issues and occurrences concerning women during the Hajj, given the gathering of people with diverse cultures and backgrounds.
The NAWOJ President urged the National Hajj Commission and state governments to consider these challenges in future planning. She also commended the Borno State model, which includes both male and female journalists in covering the Hajj exercise annually.
Ibrahim’s call highlights the importance of inclusivity and support for female journalists in their roles, particularly in challenging assignments like the Hajj. By advocating for special considerations, she aims to ensure that female journalists can effectively cover the event and address the unique needs and concerns of women during the pilgrimage.
