A viral video has sparked widespread outrage over alleged neglect of an accident victim at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abuja.
The video shows a good Samaritan rushing the victim to the hospital’s emergency unit, only to be met with what appears to be indifference from hospital staff.
The good Samaritan recorded a video, expressing frustration over the staff’s alleged lack of assistance and gloves. “If you don’t have manpower, let’s tell the honorable minister that at least you need more staff. Also, that you lack medical supply as claimed.”
The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, has directed a full investigation into the incident.
According to the directive, the investigation’s findings will be made public, and the government will take necessary actions to address the concerns raised.
The hospital’s management has initiated a thorough probe to uncover the facts surrounding the incident.
Preliminary findings indicate that the emergency department had adequate medical supplies, including latex gloves, resuscitation equipment, and patient transfer equipment, contrary to the claims made in the video.
According to a press statement disclosed on Sunday, June 8, 2025, by Obadiah N.K. Gana, Public Relations Officer for FMC Abuja, the hospital has apologized for any distress caused and assured the public of their commitment to quality care. “We value the trust placed in us and are committed to providing quality care with empathy and compassion.”
The hospital’s management emphasized its open-door policy, multiple patient feedback channels, and social services, including a medical indigent fund to assist underprivileged patients with hospital bills.
FMC Abuja prides itself on its specialized services, including open-heart surgery, laser surgery, kidney transplants, spine surgery, and other high-end treatments.
The investigation’s outcome is expected to shed more light on the incident and determine the next steps in addressing the concerns raised.
