16 States, 21 LGAs Adopt Action Plans on Women, Peace and Security
By Dr. Nafisat Makinde
Nigeria has deepened its commitment to the global Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda, with 16 States and 21 Local Government Areas developing Action Plans to domesticate the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325).
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, fsi, disclosed this in Abuja during the commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of UNSCR 1325, describing the milestone as a reflection of Nigeria’s unwavering resolve to place women at the centre of peace and security governance.
She explained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the Third National Action Plan (NAP) on Women, Peace and Security, a framework designed to guide national policy, coordination, and implementation. A multi-stakeholder National Committee, she added, will soon be inaugurated to drive the process and ensure full implementation across all levels of government.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim also highlighted tangible reforms across Nigeria’s security institutions, including the creation of Gender Desk Offices in the Armed Forces and paramilitary agencies. She further noted that Nigeria has surpassed the United Nations 17 percent benchmark for women’s participation in peacekeeping operations, achieving 21.2 percent representation.
“These are not symbolic achievements,” the Minister said. “They show that when women lead in peace, nations rise in strength.” She reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting gender inclusion, professionalism, and human rights within the country’s security sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Minister commended development partners, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations for their collaboration, adding that the new Action Plan would consolidate Nigeria’s leadership in the global Women, Peace and Security movement.
