The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has approved a massive ₦65.76 billion for the implementation of the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) in 2025. This significant investment aims to strengthen primary healthcare in Nigeria and improve healthcare services for millions of Nigerians.
According to the ministry, ₦32.88 billion has been approved for the first and second quarters of 2025, while another ₦32.88 billion has been approved for the third quarter.
“These reforms are about increasing government revenue to fund critical sectors like health and education. Good healthcare requires investment, and we are laying the foundation for that,” said Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.
Pate also emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving healthcare goals, stating, “The BHCPF is working because of the broad collaboration and alignment across all levels of government.”
The BHCPF has already made a significant impact, with over 37 million Nigerians accessing healthcare services through the initiative. The fund’s implementation is being driven by transparency and inclusivity, with the Oversight Committee ensuring effective use of funds.
“The Oversight Committee showcases a model of governance that includes sub-national actors, civil society, and all key agencies. This synergy is leading to more effective service delivery,” noted Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, Minister of State for Health.
The ministry also announced other key developments, including the formal approval of the revised BHCPF Guidelines 2.0 and the phased rollout of the Mini District Health Information System (Mini-DHIS) in July 2025.
With this significant investment in healthcare, Nigeria is taking a major step towards achieving its goal of providing quality healthcare to all citizens.
