The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has introduced electric vehicles for airside operations across the five international airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu. The deployment was officially announced on November 4, 2025, marking the first time electric vehicles will be used for aviation operations in Nigeria.
The initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on clean energy and climate-friendly innovation in public institutions. The vehicles can travel up to 200 kilometres on a single charge and will be supported by charging stations installed within each airport to ensure round-the-clock operations without reliance on petrol or diesel.

NiMet explained that the electric vehicles will make daily airport operations more efficient. They are quiet, emit no fumes and do not depend on fuel supply chains, which often slow down logistics. The agency believes that reduced downtime and fewer operational interruptions will help it deliver services faster and more accurately.
The introduction of the vehicles will also cut operational costs for the agency. Electric vehicles require less maintenance, help reduce noise, support energy savings and contribute to Nigeria’s carbon credit goals. This places NiMet in line with international aviation sustainability standards.
NiMet said that the innovation will allow the agency to focus more resources on key responsibilities such as weather forecasting, climate monitoring and aviation safety. It also aligns with Nigeria’s plan to adopt cleaner technology in transportation and public infrastructure.
The Director General of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, said the agency remains committed to modernizing its systems and promoting environmental responsibility. He noted that the electric vehicle deployment is one of many initiatives designed to support green growth and improve the aviation sector.
