Preserving Our Heritage, Promoting Our Future: International Mother Language Day

Imaan Sulaimam Ibrahim, Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, delivered a powerful speech today at the International Mother Language Day event, highlighting the crucial role language plays in shaping our cultural identity, fostering social cohesion, and driving sustainable development.

“International Mother Language Day is a celebration of the diversity of languages and cultures around the world,” said Imaan Sulaimam-Ibrahim. “It’s a reminder of the importance of preserving our linguistic heritage and promoting multilingualism.”

With approximately 8,324 languages spoken globally, many are at risk of disappearing due to globalization. Imaan Sulaimam-Ibrahim emphasized the need to preserve indigenous languages, which serve as the bedrock of our heritage, knowledge systems, and collective progress.

The Minister called for collective action to promote linguistic diversity and heritage, ensuring that language remains a vital component of social mobility and national growth.

Imaan Sulaimam-Ibrahim’s speech underscored the role of language in achieving gender equality, particularly in promoting women’s empowerment and education.

She concluded by saying:

“On this International Mother Language Day, I join the global community in celebrating the power of language as a vital instrument for cultural identity, social inclusion, and sustainable development.

“Let us work together to ensure that language remains a bridge, not a barrier, to empowerment and national development.”

“As we strive for gender equality, women and girls must be empowered to learn, express themselves, and engage meaningfully in their communities using their mother tongues.

“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we remain committed to advancing policies and programs that safeguard cultural diversity, promote multilingual education, and support women’s active participation in nation-building.”

embracing our linguistic heritage.” She said.
