Senate to BPP, MDAs: Align Procurement with Global Best Practices

By Dr Nafisat Makinde

The Nigerian Senate has urged the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to strengthen compliance with global standards in public spending to promote transparency and accountability.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Procurement, Senator Olajide Ipinsagba (Ondo North), made the call during a two-day retreat organized by LeadBold Resource Consulting Ltd. at Fraser Suites, Abuja. He said every naira spent by government must deliver measurable results for Nigerians.

“Public procurement is the mechanism through which government policies are transformed into tangible services, infrastructure, and development outcomes,” Ipinsagba stated. He noted that the Public Procurement Act 2007 and the creation of the BPP marked progress but called for continuous reform and adaptation.

He stressed that transparency and efficiency are vital for Nigeria’s procurement system to match international benchmarks. “By aligning our practices with global standards, we can ensure better schools, safer roads, and improved healthcare in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he added.

In her remarks, Barrister Kelechi Kingsley, Chief Executive Officer of LeadBold Resource Consulting Ltd., said the retreat aimed to strengthen the Committee’s strategic leadership and oversight capacity for effective procurement governance.

She said the programme exposed participants to global procurement regulations and practical frameworks designed to ensure value for money in public expenditure and enhance institutional integrity.
