Lagos, October 1, 2025 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday commissioned the refurbished Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, formerly the National Arts Theatre, in Iganmu, Lagos.
The landmark event marked the formal rebirth of Nigeria’s foremost cultural arena, which has been under renovation in recent years. The renaming in honour of Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka reflects government recognition of his global stature and contributions to literature, drama, and human rights.
The re-opening and re-dedication ceremony drew dignitaries including Prof. Soyinka; First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu; Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi Lamido; and Central Bank Governor Yemi Cardoso. Their presence underscored the national importance of the project and its role in advancing the creative economy.
In his remarks, President Tinubu called for the establishment of an endowment fund to sustain the centre, noting that Nigeria’s creative industry is not only a cultural treasure but also a significant contributor to economic growth, employment, and international reputation. The appeal for sustainable funding highlighted the government’s intention to ensure the centre does not fall again into neglect.
The 4,000-capacity complex has undergone extensive renovations, including modern technical upgrades, new seating, and improved backstage facilities. These enhancements, according to officials, will enable the theatre to host world-class productions and strengthen Lagos’s position as the heartbeat of Nigeria’s cultural life.
Originally built in the 1970s and famously showcased during FESTAC ’77, the theatre has long been a symbol of national pride. Its transformation into the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts is expected to create new opportunities for festivals, stage productions, exhibitions, and cultural diplomacy programs, thereby linking Nigeria’s heritage to its contemporary creative aspirations.
Photographs released by the State House show President Tinubu unveiling a commemorative plaque alongside Prof. Soyinka, while dignitaries toured the refurbished facility. The ceremony also featured colourful performances by cultural troupes, reflecting the vibrancy of Nigeria’s artistic tradition and marking the official return of the country’s foremost arts venue.
